We decided
to spend the next weekend in a city called Salta and had everything booked in
advance while we had heard that it’s very busy there over the Easter period. Still things didn’t do again as planned…
First of
all when we arrived to our hostel we realized that this hostel was not even
operating anymore! It was shut down and we don’t understand how it was even
possible to make the booking there over the internet. Then we had the problem
of finding another place to stay and of course everything was booked out for
the whole weekend! We were already planning to take the bus straight to Bolivia
as it was our next destination but luckily we got help from the lovely locals…
We had put
a message on the couchsurfing-website that we need a place to stay immediately
in Salta and got a reply from a nice guy who happened to have a couch available
for us for the weekend. And it wasn’t just a couch what we got but a luxury
accommodation in a massive house where our host was living alone with his housemaid!
We got our own room and bathroom and we were so lucky to stay at his lovely
home that weekend and rest before the next journey to Bolivia.
Our host Ernesto also showed us around the city with his car and we drove to a smaller town called San Lorenzo and ate the best empanadas we ever had had! In the evening we had dinner in a local restaurant and finally tasted a big steak which we had been searching the whole time in Argentina. Later it was time to check the nightlife of the city and it was pretty busy while the city was full of tourists both international and locals.
The next day we rested well before taking the night bus to Bolivia. Before the journey we had the whole day time to look around the city and also eat good dinner. We also tried first time the coca-leaves which are used a lot in Bolivia but also in some parts of Argentina. It was a bit strange to chew these leaves and just leave it on our cheek until we felt that the cheek was numb. Otherwise we didn’t feel any effects while it should reduce the feeling of hungry and thirsty and also help in the high altitude which is the reason while it is used so much in Bolivia. So being relaxed the last days in Argentina, we were ready to start our adventures in Bolivia!
